The Standards Behind Our Entry Selections
Posted on by The Quarry
There is a shade of white found nowhere else in the world, soft, glowing, and marked with grey veins like the last light of evening. It comes from one place only: high in the Apuan Alps of Italy, almost 1,500 metres above sea level, where millions of years of heat and pressure transformed ordinary limestone into something rare. The world calls it Carrara. The Romans were the first to discover it. Centuries later, Michelangelo is said to have walked these same mountains, searching for the block that would become his David. Carrara remains one of the most celebrated Imported Marbles to reach Indian homes today.
Carrara doesn’t yield its best stone easily. Neither do we.
At The Quarry, we call it the 80-20 rule. And we apply it twice.
First, at the mountain itself. Only the top 20% of the stone makes the cut. The rest is set aside for reasons most would never notice. Sections too close to a water source, where prolonged exposure weakens the structure from within. Sections with a higher concentration of impurities, which can later surface as staining. Then we look again at that top 20% and reject four out of every five blocks.
Understanding Italian Marbles Quality begins here: what remains hasn’t simply been picked. It has passed the same exacting standard twice over.
Even after this, the stone is still just a rough, heavy block, nothing like the polished slab it will become. That transformation happens at a specialist facility in Verona, Italy, one of the few places in the world equipped to process marble at this level. Here, the block is cut into slabs just twenty millimetres thick and cooled at every step with water drawn from the Alps themselves. Skilled Italian craftsmen then polish the surface, slowly revealing the veins and the glow that make Carrara so instantly recognisable.
Only once this process is complete does the marble finally make its journey to The Quarry, leaving Verona, crossing the sea, and arriving at last somewhere quieter. A hallway that catches the first light of morning. A wall that frames a staircase. A space a family will walk past a hundred times in the rush of an ordinary day, until the day they finally stop, and truly notice it.
For those who wish to bring Carrara home, our Italian marble selections, including Carrara, begin at ₹1,850 per sq. ft., a small number standing at the end of a long and careful journey.
Even arrival isn’t the final step. A beautiful slab can still lose its quiet beauty in careless hands, which is why The Quarry Projects Team takes over from here. Trained in-house and skilled in both installation and intricate inlay work, they bring that same care to every personalised marbles commission, chosen right from the mountain. A stone’s true character only reveals itself fully once it has found its place, and that, perhaps, is the last quiet act of craftsmanship.
Some things simply cannot be rushed. They are earned slowly by people who have spent years learning which stone deserves to make this journey at all. The Quarry, in Mumbai, exists for those who recognise that. For those who wish to experience Carrara for themselves, and explore our finest Luxury Marbles, an invitation always awaits.
