Onyx is the second kind. It doesn't announce itself the way granite does, or carry the quiet elegance of marble. It does something far more personal than either. It glows, not from its surface, but from somewhere deep within itself, the way light moves through something ancient and layered and entirely its own.
Once you have stood before a backlit slab of onyx, nothing else in the room exists for a moment. That experience has a reason, and it begins thousands of years before the stone ever reached a gallery.
Born of Water, Built Over Time
Every other stone in this series was born of fire, pressure, or tectonic collision. Onyx arrived differently, through patience alone, and it has not one but two origin stories to show for it.
- In volcanic environments, mineral rich fluids move slowly through gas cavities in volcanic rock, depositing layer upon layer of chalcedony, one thin band at a time, over thousands of years.
- In cave environments, calcite rich groundwater seeps through limestone, leaving behind mineral deposits that accumulate band by band across millennia, building the stone in complete darkness.
Two completely different processes. One extraordinary result.
Those thousands of years of thin, parallel layers create a stone unlike anything else in the natural world. Light doesn't bounce off onyx the way it does off marble or granite. It enters the stone and travels through it, illuminating each layer from within. The glow you see is not a surface effect. It is geological time, made quietly visible. And because no two slabs were ever formed under the same conditions, no two ever glow the same way.
Not All Onyx Is Equal
With a stone this rare, origin matters as much as appearance.
Onyx is found across Mexico, Turkey and Iran. Mexican onyx carries golden ivory veins that soften its purity. Turkish onyx is similarly marked. Iranian onyx is in a category of its own. Pure white, finely textured and homogeneous in structure, it is the rarest and most refined grade available anywhere in the world. At The Quarry, it is the only grade we work with, not because it is the most convenient to source, but because once you have seen it beside any other grade, the difference is not a matter of preference. It is a matter of standard.
The Process Behind the Purity
Even the finest onyx carries a quiet vulnerability that selection alone cannot address.
Its crystalline structure, the very source of its translucency, also makes it naturally fragile. This is where our proprietary QVAC process becomes essential, developed and owned entirely by The Quarry. Every block travels to Spain, where we place it inside a vacuum chamber, extract the impurities from within, and introduce a high-grade resin deep into the stone's structure.
